Centre for Materials Science and Engineering

The Centre for Materials Science and Engineering ceased to operate as an academic unit of the University of Edinburgh in 2010.

CMSE was set up in 2000 to promote materials research across the University. It acted as an unfunded virtual centre, to bring together academic staff from many Schools who were active in materials research. It was highly successful as a springboard for various initiatives in the field of materials.

In particular,
CMSE members secured important funding to establish the Edinburgh Materials Microanalysis Centre [EMMAC], and the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions [CSEC]. In addition, an Institute for Materials and Processes [IMP] was set up in the School of Engineering, and materials chemistry was established as a leading research theme of the School of Chemistry.

All enquiries about Materials at the University of Edinburgh should now be directed to one of these four academic units.
